CalDigit Tuff is a portable drive with 2 TB memory. It has a USB-C port which makes it reliable to work with several computers and ultraportable laptops. It is compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, which makes it convenient for customers using the latest devices such as the MacBook which has USB-C ports that make storing high-quality audio/video files or high-resolution photos extremely fast. As of now, the maximum transfer speed of USB-C is 10 Gbps, but the drive is also compatible with the latest Thunderbolt 3 technology with transfer speed as high as 40 Gbps. The user does not need to carry around an extra power cord with them; the drive is powered through the same port used for data transfer, making it bus powered.
CalDigit Tuff with 2 TB memory has a larger capacity than the 1 TB SSD version. However, it is slower. The market price of the 2 TB HDD is around $162.
The product undoubtedly lives up to its name with a rugged body designed for rough use; it can protect your data from falls, rain, drowning, and dust. However, if the nature of your work is regular office-based or home-based and your devices are usually taken care of, the CalDigit Tuff is certainly more than you need. There are many cheaper options available with more storage for a not-so-rough use, such as the Samsung T3 or WD My Passport.

The CalDigit Tuff is said to have cleared the customary MIL-STD-810G test, so it is physically resilient and can bear drops at 1.2m over 4 times without incurring any damage.
The Tuff is IP57 certified, which means it is a rugged drive with extreme weather protection. It can bear harsh environmental conditions such as the desert and rain. It is dust and water resistant and can be submerged in 1-meter deep water for about 30 minutes. The drive is suitable for professionals who have the frequent need to take their work on the road. It is the first waterproof portable drive ever seen. While there are other tough drives, they can only bear splashes.
This drive measures 2.5 inches in size; it is not compact, but it is neither too huge. The ruggedness of the drive is due to its casing, which is based on firm aluminum as well as a changeable rubber external shell that is available in various colors, such as green, orange, blue, black and gray. Every new drive has this external rubber shell. For $15, an extra shell can also be bought.
The USB-C port allows it to be used with every new device. It can also be used with the old devices as the USB-C to USB-A cable is also included.
Both versions CalDigit are quite fast. The 1 TB SSD is obviously faster than the 2 TB hard drive one. However, the 2 TB version was pretty fast itself with a read/write speed of 130 Mbps.
No Encryption Method
The one drawback that CalDigit Tuff has is that it doesn’t use any encryption method. The Tuff doesn’t have any option to protect the data it stores from misuse in case of any theft or loss.
Reformatting Required for Windows
The USB-C port of the Tuff makes it a Mac preformatted drive. If it is required to be used for Windows, it has to be formatted as NTFS or exFAT first. NTFS allows the device to run only with Windows, whereas exFAT allows the drive to run with both interchangeably.
The CalDigit Tuff 2 TB portable drive is perfect for users who might have a rough use of the device. It can protect the data from falls, water, and dirt. It is bus powered, so no need to drag an extra power cord along. The drive is perfect for the latest devices and is specially formatted for the MacBook. It can also be used with Windows but after formatting it first. It has a decent speed and storage and it is neither too huge nor too compact. It is perfect to carry around on a road trip with you.
